Problems with water!

Long story short have used melafix the past week to treat damaged fins on one of my cichlids, did a 50% water change once treatment completed as recommended, following day tested the levels in my water. Nitrates and nitrites sky high! all other levels are fine. To add to my annoyance have just been informed my fish may have been extremely over fed (most probably why the levels are so high). Was going to try 20% daily water changes in the hope it will bring levels back down and gradually remove the waste. Any advice would be much appreciated as i have never had this problem before and i dont want to end up with a tank full of dead fish by the end of the week!

Hi, dont know much about chiclads but for the water i use SeaChem, is a fantastic product and converts nitrates and amonia to something the filter can take out of the tank. Highly recomend as you can do "emergency" doses if you have a nitrate/nitrate problem.

Thanks for the advice, i went to a lfs yesterday and tried to get hold of some seachem they didnt have any, no surprises there! Carried on with the water changes, my back is done in but the levels are now starting to come down nicely thank god. Think i may have to add it too the list of other things i have to order off of the internet seen as my lfs never seem to have anything i need in stock lol

Seachem Prime, looks like it's for marines but it's for both - fantastic product, ebays the cheapest

I always use prime, a little goes a long way, its excellent, as is all the seachem stuff.
